Backlight Bleeding
Just like morning sunlight leaking through gaps around blackout curtains, it is when light sneaks out from the edges of a screen.
Definition Backlight bleeding is a display phenomenon where light from the screen's backlight unit escapes through bezel gaps or between liquid crystals, making edges look unevenly bright or washed out on dark scenes. It is structurally common in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that rely on a backlight.
Why Does Light Leak on a Dark Screen?
You have probably seen sunlight sneak around the edges of tightly drawn window blinds. Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) work in a remarkably similar way.
LCD panels cannot generate their own light. Instead, they keep a light source called a backlight running behind the screen, with millions of microscopic liquid crystals acting like tiny blinds in front of it. When displaying black, these crystals twist shut to block out the light.
However, during assembly, slight pressure from the frame or tiny gaps can prevent the layers from sealing perfectly. When this happens, backlight escapes through microscopic openings, creating what we call backlight bleed. It becomes especially noticeable as a hazy glow around the corners when watching dark movie scenes in a dim room.
A Closer Look: Pressure Gaps vs. Viewing Angles
Backlight bleed happens because of physical unevenness created when screws or bezels clamp down on the display layers. If pressure is distributed unevenly, the liquid crystals cannot block light uniformly, causing localized bright spots.
Many people confuse this with IPS glow. IPS panels naturally exhibit a faint glow near the corners when viewed from off-angles. Unlike backlight bleedβwhich stays fixed in the exact same spot regardless of where you lookβIPS glow shifts in brightness and position as you move your head from side to side.
If a bright, patchy spot stays in the exact same corner when viewed straight on, it is true backlight bleed caused by mechanical pressure. If the glowing spot shifts with your viewing angle, it is simply IPS glow.
Display Technologies That Eliminate Bleeding
If backlight bleed bothers you when shopping for a monitor or TV, it helps to check the panel type and lighting method. Because backlight bleed is an inherent limitation of displays with a separate light source, different technologies handle it differently.
Modern displays often use local dimming, which divides the backlight into dozens or hundreds of independent zones. By turning off the backlight entirely behind dark sections of the image, it drastically reduces light leakage.
The ultimate solution is OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode). In OLED panels, each individual pixel generates its own light and turns completely off to display black. With no shared backlight running behind the screen, backlight bleeding is physically impossible.

Any monitor with backlight bleed is a defective product that needs replacement.
Due to the layered structure of LCDs and bezel pressure, almost every LCD monitor has a slight amount of backlight bleed. If it is only noticeable in a pitch-black room and invisible during normal everyday lighting, it is considered within normal manufacturing tolerances.
