When this happens, the system has no choice but to travel all the way to the main storage drive or across the internet to the original server. It is like having to walk to the library because the book was not on your desk.

Once the computer fetches the data from the distant source, it makes a quick copy in the cache, thinking, 'I might need this again soon.' This ensures that the next time you ask for it, you get a super-fast cache hit.

A Closer Look: Why Cache Isn't Limitless

To be more precise, a cache cannot store an infinite amount of data. Ultra-fast memory used for caching is exceptionally high-performing, but it is also very expensive, so its storage capacity must be kept small.
