Definition A hydrogen fuel cell is a device that directly converts the chemical energy released when hydrogen reacts with oxygen from the air into electricity without burning it as heat. Because it combines fuels electrochemically instead of combusting them, it emits pure water instead of exhaust fumes or greenhouse gases.

Reversing the process of splitting water

You might remember a classic science class experiment where running electricity through water splits it into hydrogen and oxygen gas. Breaking apart a water molecule yields those two gases. A hydrogen fuel cell is an ingenious device that runs this exact process in reverse.

Hydrogen and oxygen have a strong natural attraction and eagerly combine to form water. As they snap together, they unleash a tremendous amount of stored chemical energy.

Traditional power plants and combustion engines burn fuel to turn this energy into intense heat, which then drives turbines or pistons. But a hydrogen fuel cell bypasses heat entirely, converting energy directly into electricity, which minimizes energy loss and produces zero emissions.

How it works: A maze for electrons

If you simply mix hydrogen and oxygen together and light a spark, they explode with a loud bang, creating only heat. To extract usable electricity, you must separate hydrogen's positively charged protons from its negatively charged electrons.

Right in the middle of a fuel cell sits a specialized barrier called an electrolyte membrane. This membrane lets protons pass through while firmly blocking electrons. With nowhere else to go, the electrons are forced to take a detour through an external wire.

That rush of countless electrons traveling along this outside path is the electric current we use to power devices. Once the electrons reach the other side, they reunite with the protons and oxygen from the air, happily forming clean water droplets.

Not a battery that stores power, but a generator that makes it

Because it is called a fuel 'cell,' people often mistake it for a battery like the one in a smartphone that stores electricity beforehand. But while a conventional battery is like a storage warehouse for power, a hydrogen fuel cell is a miniature power generator that keeps producing electricity as long as fuel is supplied.

A smartphone's lithium-ion battery takes hours to recharge once it runs out of juice. In contrast, a hydrogen vehicle can refuel with hydrogen gas in 3 to 5 minutes, just like pumping gas at a station, and immediately start generating fresh power to hit the road again.

What is more, because fuel cells need pure oxygen to work, they pull in massive amounts of surrounding air and filter out fine dust along the way, effectively doubling as giant rolling air purifiers.
