The kind we often see on highways or in deserts is an 'inferior mirage.' The sun bakes the ground, creating a scorching layer of air right above the asphalt with cooler air sitting above it.

Blue light coming down from the sky meets this hot air layer near the surface and bends upward into our eyes before hitting the ground. Our brains assume light always travels in straight lines. As a result, we perceive the blue sky reflected on the ground as a puddle of blue water.

On the flip side, over icy waters or glaciers, you get a 'superior mirage.' Here, freezing air hugs the surface beneath warmer air aloft. Light bends downward, making distant ships or islands appear as if they are floating high in the sky.
