Definition Short for 'volume pixel,' a voxel is the smallest cubic building block that holds position and color data in a three-dimensional grid. Just as a 2D digital photo is made of tiny square pixels, a 3D object can be built out of tiny cube blocks.

Why Aren't Voxels Used Everywhere?
To be more precise, making voxels look ultra-smooth and realistic places a massive strain on computers. Because the system has to track hidden internal cubes in addition to visible surfaces, memory and processing requirements skyrocket exponentially.
To smooth out curves, voxels must be shrunk down like tiny grains of sand. That quickly explodes into billions of calculations, causing standard computers and consoles to crawl.
That is why modern graphics lean on lightweight polygons for everyday rendering, while blending in voxels selectively for destructible terrain, smoke and fire simulations, or precision medical imaging.
