In 1912, German meteorologist Alfred Wegener turned this simple curiosity into groundbreaking scientific research. He gathered compelling evidence: identical fossils of a freshwater reptile named *Mesosaurus*โ€”a creature that could never swim across an oceanโ€”were found on both distant continents. Rock layers in mountain ranges and ancient glacial deposits thousands of miles apart lined up seamlessly when placed together.

Based on these clues, Wegener proposed that around 300 million years ago, all landmasses formed one giant supercontinent. He named this ancient land "Pangaea," from the Greek word meaning "all lands."

But He Couldn't Explain the "How"

Wegener's bold claim sent shockwaves through the scientific community, but it was met with fierce skepticism and ridicule. His theory had one major flaw: if massive continents had moved, what force was strong enough to push such heavy landmasses across the globe?

Wegener suggested that Earth's rotation or tidal forces from the sun and moon plowed the continents through the ocean floor like icebreakers. Physicists quickly debunked this, proving that those forces were far too weak to plow solid rock through solid ocean basins.

Because Wegener couldn't provide a convincing driving force, his theory of continental drift was rejected and forgotten for decades. Wegener tragically died during an expedition in Greenland without ever seeing his ideas vindicated.

The Modern Revival: Plate Tectonics

Decades after Wegener's death, advanced sonar technology allowed scientists to map the deep ocean floor. This changed everything. Researchers discovered underwater mountain ranges where fresh magma rose up, creating new crust and actively widening the ocean basins.

Scientists realized that hot mantle rock deep underground slowly circulates through convection currents, carrying the crust above it. Continents were not simply floating across the ocean floor; instead, massive rigid plates consisting of the crust and upper mantle were moving together as a whole.

Modern science built upon Wegener's original idea to establish the theory of "Plate Tectonics." While Wegener's initial mechanism was flawed, his daring insight that continents were once united became one of the greatest foundations of modern Earth science.
