If you look at a topographic map, not all lines have the same thickness. Among the thin lines, you will see a bold, heavy line every so often with numbers like "100" or "200" printed on it.

The standard thin lines are called intermediate contours, while the thicker, labeled lines drawn every fifth line are known as index contours. Without index contours, you would have to count every single line by hand to figure out the elevation.

To be precise, the vertical distance between lines (the contour interval) depends on the map scale. On a 1:50,000 scale map, each line represents a 20-meter rise, while a 1:25,000 map draws lines every 10 meters for finer detail.
