It is like the waiting time between dropping a letter in the mailbox and receiving a reply.
Definition Latency is the time delay between sending a data signal and receiving a response. It is the key factor that determines how instantaneous internet connections, online gaming, and video calls feel.
How Does Bandwidth Differ from Latency?
Even if you ship packages using a massive cargo truck, the drive to the destination still takes time. Internet communication works the exact same way. The amount of data you can send at once is different from how quickly a signal travels. If bandwidth is the number of lanes on a highway, latency is the actual travel time it takes for a car to reach its destination.
No matter how wide a 10-lane highway is, you will arrive late if the speed limit is only 20 mph. On the other hand, a single-lane road allows a small delivery to arrive much faster if the car speeds at 70 mph. Wide lanes (bandwidth) are great for downloading huge movie files, but a low-latency connection is far more critical when you need instant responses, such as in online gaming.
Latency is usually measured in milliseconds (ms, or one-thousandth of a second). Delays below 10 ms are almost imperceptible to humans, but anything over 100 ms causes noticeable lag in mouse clicks and screen updates.
Why Does Latency Occur?
Although light and radio waves travel blazingly fast, they are still bound by physical speed limits. When sending a signal from New York to a server on the other side of the globe, traveling through fiber-optic cables naturally takes tens of milliseconds for a round trip. This physical travel distance is the primary source of latency.
Every piece of networking equipment along the route also adds processing time. Before reaching its destination, a signal passes through dozens of routers and switches. Each device inspects the data and determines the next path, adding small delays at every hop.
Finally, there is network congestion. Just like cars backing up at a highway tollbooth, data queued in network buffers causes waiting delays to spike. Latency is the combined result of physical distance, hardware processing time, and traffic congestion.
A Closer Look
In gaming and everyday internet use, latency usually refers to Round-Trip Time (RTT). It is the total round-trip travel time for a signal to leave your computer, reach a server, and return with a response. When you run a ping test, you are measuring this round-trip time.
In some industrial settings or sensor telemetry, however, latency refers only to one-way transmission time. Depending on the context, distinguishing between one-way and round-trip delay is important.
Latency is also not staticโit fluctuates constantly. This variation in latency over time is called jitter. A connection with slightly high but steady latency can stream video smoothly, but high jitter causes stuttering and choppy playback.

Upgrading to an expensive 1 Gbps gigabit internet plan will automatically eliminate gaming lag.
A 1 Gbps plan increases bandwidth (the width of the data pipe), but it does not speed up the physical transmission speed of light or shorten travel distance. If the physical distance to the server or network route remains unchanged, latency will barely improve.
