Light Absorption
Just like a dry sponge soaking up water, matter swallows and holds onto incoming light energy.
Definition Light absorption is the process where matter takes in light energy instead of bouncing it off or letting it pass through. This absorbed energy makes molecules move faster, mostly turning into heat.
Why Are Apples Red and Black Shirts Hot?
White light from sunlight or lamps is actually a blend of every rainbow color. When this light hits an object, certain colors bounce off while others get swallowed inside, depending on the material.
An apple looks red not because its peel glows with red light. Rather, it absorbs almost every other colorโlike blue, green, and yellowโand bounces off only red light into our eyes.
In contrast, black clothes absorb almost all visible colors of light without letting them escape. Since no light bounces back, our eyes see black. That trapped light energy turns directly into heat, which is why a black shirt feels so scorchingly hot under the summer sun.
Zooming In: How Electrons Swallow Light
If you zoom in to the atomic level, electrons orbit a central nucleus on specific energy paths. These paths are like fixed steps on a staircaseโelectrons can never stand in the awkward space between steps.
Light arrives in packets of energy called photons. When the energy of an incoming photon matches the exact jump to the next step, an electron swallows that light and leaps up to a higher level (an excited state).
Every material has different step heights. That is why each substance can absorb only the colors of light that match its exact energy steps. Any light that doesn't fit the gap passes straight through or bounces away.
From Plant Food to Sunscreen
Nature and humans put light absorption to brilliant use. Plant leaves look green because a pigment called chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light for photosynthesis while bouncing away green light. Plants then convert this absorbed light energy into chemical energy to feed themselves.
Sunscreen works on a similar principle. Organic compounds in the lotion absorb powerful UV rays before they damage skin cells, converting them into tiny amounts of harmless heat.
Solar panels rely on light absorption too. When semiconductors absorb sunlight, they release a flow of electrons that generates clean electricity.
๐ค Common misconceptions
A red object looks red because it contains red light inside.
A red object does not store red light; it absorbs all other colors and reflects only red light to your eyes.
๐งบ Where you meet it
Light absorption occurs when matter captures light energy of specific wavelengths and turns it into heat or other forms of energy.
