Why Use Light-Years Instead of Miles or Kilometers?

A cross-country flight might span a few thousand miles, and circling the entire globe is roughly 25,000 miles (40,000 km). But once you leave Earth and venture into deep space, everyday units like miles or kilometers become far too tiny to be useful.

Looking at the Night Sky Is Looking Back in Time

Even though light is the fastest traveler in the universe, it still takes time to cover distance. Because space is unfathomably vast, light leaving a distant celestial object must complete an epic journey before finally reaching our eyes on Earth.

To Be Exact: It Is Not a Unit of Time

Because the word "year" is part of the name, many people assume a light-year measures time. However, a light-year does not measure timeโ€”it measures physical distance.

We use a similar shortcut in daily conversation when we describe distance using travel time. Saying "the coffee shop is a 10-minute walk" is the exact same logic. A light-year simply means "the physical distance traveled if you move at light speed for one full year."

Astronomers rely on different units depending on the scale. For objects within our solar system, they use the Astronomical Unit (AU), the average distance from Earth to the Sun. For measuring stellar parallax, they use the parsec (pc).
