Definition Metadata literally means 'data about data.' It refers to the descriptive details attached to files and content to explain, organize, and manage them. A classic example is a digital photo: beyond the pixel colors making up the picture, the file also stores the date taken, location, and camera model.

When you order clothes online, they arrive inside a cardboard box with a shipping label attached to the outside. That label lists the sender, recipient address, package weight, and shipping date.
