Definition Morse code is a communication system that encodes letters and numbers into combinations of just two elements: dots (short signals) and dashes (long signals). The More Common the Letter, the Shorter the Code
Take a closer look at the Morse code chart, and you will find an ingenious design choice. Inventor Samuel Morse did not assign codes randomly. Instead, he visited a local print shop and counted the type in the compositor's cases to see which letters appeared most frequently in the English language.
As a result, the most frequently used letter, 'E', was given the shortest codeโa single dot (ยท)โwhile the second most common letter, 'T', got a single dash (-). In contrast, rare letters like 'Q' (--ยท-) and 'Z' (--ยทยท) were assigned longer sequences.
By keeping frequent letters short, telegraph operators could transmit messages much faster with far less finger fatigue. In fact, this smart optimization made Morse code a historic pioneer of modern data compression.
To Be More Precise: Rhythm and Silence Are Everything
Morse code is not just about tapping dots and dashes. To ensure the receiver decodes the message without confusion, you must strictly follow precise ratios of duration and pauses.
To be exact, if the length of a dot is considered 1 unit of time, a dash must last exactly 3 units. Pauses between dots and dashes within the same letter last 1 unit, the gap between letters lasts 3 units, and the space between words lasts 7 units. If you ignore these pauses, the meaning changes completely. For instance, tapping three dots (ยทยทยท) without pauses is the letter 'S', but tapping them with 3-unit pauses turns into 'E E E'.
There is one notable exception: the international distress signal SOS. To avoid fatal misreadings during emergencies, it is sent as one unbroken stream of three dots, three dashes, and three dots without letter gaps. In Morse code, the rhythm of silence matters just as much as the signals themselves.
