Picture two accomplices arrested by the police and interrogated in separate rooms. The detective makes each of them a tempting offer: if you confess and testify against your partner, you go free immediately, while your silent partner gets 10 years in prison. If both of you stay loyal and keep quiet, there is not enough evidence, so you each only serve a light 1-year sentence.
However, if both of you betray each other and confess, you both get 5 years in prison. In their isolated cells, each suspect starts calculating.
