Once you add heat and raise the temperature, the atoms rapidly snap into a rigid, orderly cubic lattice called 'austenite.' As the tilted atoms spring back to the regular, high-temperature positions they first remembered, the entire metal forcefully returns to its original form without missing a beat.

This unique superpower makes shape-memory alloys essential in consumer goods, deep space exploration, and modern medicine. The most famous variety is 'Nitinol,' an alloy created by blending equal parts nickel and titanium.
When launching spacecraft, engineers fold giant communication antennas into tight packages inside rockets. Once in orbit, the antenna warms up in direct sunlight and blooms wide open on its own to contact Earth. It is the perfect way to deploy bulky structures without heavy motors or hinges.
These alloys also save lives in hospitals every day. A prime example is the vascular stent, a tiny mesh tube used to widen clogged blood vessels. Inserted in a chilled, ultra-thin shape, the stent senses body heat at 98.6ยฐF (37ยฐC) and expands inside the artery, effortlessly reopening the pathway for blood.
