Definition Standard time is the official reference time established by law for a specific region or country to share. Because the Earth is round, the exact moment the Sun peaks overhead differs slightly from town to town, but to avoid chaos, everyone agrees to use the time measured at a single reference meridian (line of longitude).
When Trains Arrived, Local Clocks Fell into Chaos
In the past, people set their clocks to noon (12:00 PM) based on when the Sun peaked over their town square. Solar noon in one city differed by a few minutes from a neighboring town, but back when people traveled on foot or horseback, those tiny gaps never caused any trouble.
Everything changed when railroads arrived and high-speed trains began connecting distant cities. Because every town kept its own local solar time—differing by five or ten minutes—scheduling trains became a nightmare. Conflicting timetables even caused horrific head-on train collisions. Station walls were soon cluttered with dozens of clocks, each showing a different city's time.

The 15-Degree Rule: Slicing Earth into 24 Time Zones
The Earth is a sphere, completing a full 360-degree rotation every 24 hours (one day). Dividing 360 degrees by 24 hours gives exactly 15 degrees. In other words, every 15 degrees of longitude traveled east or west equals a one-hour time difference.
Using this principle, countries around the world set the Prime Meridian running through Greenwich, England, as 0 degrees longitude and sliced the globe into 24 standard time zones at 15-degree intervals. Every region within the same zone agreed to share the exact same standard time.
Thanks to this system, traveling across borders no longer requires adjusting messy minute hands—you simply shift the hour hand by one-hour increments to easily sync your time anywhere in the world.
A Closer Look: The Gap Between the Sun and Your Watch
The time on your wrist does not perfectly match the exact position of the Sun right above your head. This happens because of a slight gap between natural 'solar time' and artificially standardized 'standard time.'
For example, South Korea sets its standard time along the 135° E meridian. However, its capital, Seoul, is actually located near 126.98° E (around 127° E). Because Seoul lies west of the reference line, the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky around 12:30 PM rather than 12:00 PM on the clock.
Standard time represents a wise human compromise: choosing social convenience and harmony over perfect solar alignment. If every household insisted on setting clocks strictly by their own local noon, modern air travel and global financial markets would simply be impossible.
