How Did They Get So Massive?

Packing millions or billions of stars into one place is no small feat, even for the cosmos. Scientists believe these monsters formed either from the direct collapse of colossal gas clouds in the early universe, or by relentlessly colliding and merging with smaller black holes over eons.

As surrounding gas and dust spiral into a supermassive black hole, they form a swirling structure called an accretion disk. The intense friction superheats this matter, unleashing brilliant radiation that can outshine all the stars in an entire galaxy combined. These active cosmic beacons are known as quasars.

To put it into perspective, astronomers have found fully grown supermassive black holes in the very early universe, shortly after the Big Bang. How they managed to grow so massive so quickly remains one of the most thrilling mysteries in modern astrophysics.

Are They Just Destructive Monsters?

When people think of black holes, they usually picture cosmic vacuum cleaners, swallowing every star and planet in sight. But supermassive black holes do far more than just consume.

As matter plunges toward the event horizon, a fraction of it gets blasted away along the poles at near light-speed in narrow beams known as relativistic jets. These powerful jets and fierce radiation blast through the galaxy, heating and displacing vast clouds of cold gas.

This cosmic feedback prevents galaxies from churning out too many stars too quickly, while also compressing distant gas pockets to spark the birth of new stars. In this way, supermassive black holes act as galactic thermostats, regulating the growth and balance of entire star systems.
