Definition A tsunami is a series of massive ocean waves triggered when the seafloor suddenly shifts due to an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption. Unlike normal surface waves, the entire column of waterโ€”from the ocean floor to the surfaceโ€”moves together, carrying immense energy toward the coast.

What Happens When the Bathtub Floor Lifts Up

Normal ocean waves are generated by wind blowing across the surface, like ripples forming when you blow across a swimming pool. Deep underwater, scuba divers cannot even tell that surface waves are rolling overhead.

A tsunami is entirely different. When an earthquake ruptures the ocean crust and causes the seabed to suddenly lurch upward or drop down, the entire column of ocean water above it surges at once. Imagine the bottom plate of a bathtub suddenly jerking upward, lifting all the water in the tub into the air.

In the deep ocean, a tsunami races as fast as a passenger jet, reaching speeds around 500 mph (800 km/h). Yet a ship sailing in thousands of meters of water will barely notice a tsunami passing beneath it. That is because the wavelengthโ€”the distance between wave crestsโ€”spans hundreds of kilometers, keeping the wave height under three feet (one meter).

The real danger begins as the tsunami approaches shallow coastal waters. Friction against the rising seabed slows the front of the wave down to just 25 mph (40 km/h). The massive trailing water column, still racing at high speed, compresses and surges upward.

Just like railcars telescoping upward into a massive pileup when the lead engine suddenly halts, a gentle three-foot swell rapidly morphs into a towering wall of water dozens of meters high.

The Reality: Not a Breaking Wave, but a Rising Ocean

Movies often depict tsunamis as giant, curling surf waves crashing onto a beach. In reality, a tsunami rarely looks like a picturesque breaking wave. Instead, it behaves like an endless, mountain-high surge of ocean water flooding rapidly inland.

When a tsunami is triggered by the seafloor dropping downward, the shoreline water often recedes dramatically into the open sea first, exposing the seabed. You should never walk out to collect stranded fish or shells, because the main surge will strike within minutes.

Tsunamis also do not hit just once. Like ripples spreading after a stone is tossed into a lake, waves arrive in successive surges separated by minutes or hours. Often, the second or third wave is significantly larger and far more destructive than the first.
