Keeping the water flowing ensures a constant supply of warmer groundwater, never giving the water enough still time to freeze.
Never Pour Boiling Water on a Frozen Meter
If your water meter or pipes have already frozen and no water comes out, you must be careful about how you thaw them. A common mistake is pouring boiling water directly onto the frozen unit to melt the ice quickly.
When boiling water hits freezing glass and metal, the outer surface expands almost instantly while the inner layer stays rigid. This extreme temperature difference causes thermal shock, which can instantly shatter the glass or crack the pipe body.
To thaw a frozen water meter safely, warm it gently using a hair dryer on a medium setting from a safe distance, or wrap it with towels soaked in warm water around 50ยฐC (122ยฐF). Applying heat gradually prevents thermal shock and restores water flow without costly damage.
