Why Do Photos Taken in Cafes Turn Out Yellow?
When you walk into a cozy cafe with warm yellow lighting, a white napkin still looks white to your eyes.
That is because your brain constantly makes real-time adjustments, recognizing that the surrounding light is warm and filtering it out. This remarkable human ability is called chromatic adaptationโthe way our visual system adjusts color perception based on ambient light.
However, a camera is a machine that records light exactly as it enters the lens. Because the camera sensor faithfully captures the yellow light bouncing off the napkin, the resulting photo looks entirely yellow. Unlike the human eye, a camera cannot automatically compensate for the true color of light on its own.

How a Camera Restores True White

Most modern smartphone cameras rely on Auto White Balance (AWB). Built-in sensors and algorithms analyze ambient light in fractions of a second to select the most natural color profile automatically.
You can also achieve even more accurate results by manually holding a pure white sheet of paper or a neutral gray card in front of the lens to set a custom baseline.

In physics, the color of light is measured on a scale called 'color temperature,' expressed in Kelvins (K).
Warm, reddish light like candlelight or incandescent bulbs has a lower rating of around 2,000K to 3,000K. In contrast, a clear blue sky or deep shade has a high rating between 7,000K and 10,000K. Cameras use these Kelvin values to precisely calculate color balance across the entire frame.
