Why Does Rain Turn Sour Like Vinegar?

When we drive cars and run power plants, we burn fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum. This combustion releases chemical pollutants known as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides high into the air.

As these exhaust particles drift through the atmosphere, they mix with water vapor inside clouds. This triggers chemical reactions that turn moisture into dilute sulfuric acid and dilute nitric acidโ€”the very corrosive substances studied in chemistry labs.

When these acid-laden clouds produce precipitation, it falls as acid rain. It can also reach the ground as snow, fog, or dew. In short, the toxic air pollution emitted by humans undergoes chemical changes in the sky and returns as destructive rain.

A Closer Look at the pH Scale

Even pristine rain falling through untouched air is not completely neutral (pH 7.0). Carbon dioxide naturally present in the atmosphere dissolves into raindrops to form weak carbonic acid. Because of this, clean, natural rain is already slightly acidic, with a pH of roughly 5.6.

For this reason, scientists specifically define acid rain as any precipitation with a pH below 5.6. The pH scale is logarithmic, which means that every decrease of 1 whole number represents a tenfold increase in acidity.

Rain with a pH of 4.6 is 10 times more acidic than normal rain, while a pH of 3.6 is 100 times more acidic. Near heavily industrialized areas, scientists have even recorded rainfall with acidity levels rivaling household vinegar or lemon juice.

Dissolving Marble and Withering Forests

When acid rain seeps into the ground, it washes away essential soil nutrients such as calcium and magnesium. At the same time, it releases toxic aluminum into the soil, damaging roots and causing trees to wither. As runoff flows into lakes and streams, it prevents fish eggs from hatching and devastates aquatic life.

Buildings and historical monuments suffer severe damage as well. Calcium carbonate, a major component of marble, limestone, and mortar, dissolves rapidly when exposed to acid. Across the globe, centuries-old marble statues are gradually losing their carved facial features due to acid rain.

Furthermore, air pollutants travel thousands of miles on wind currents across international borders. Because smoke released in one country can destroy forests and lakes in another, nations around the world work together to install smokestack scrubbers and reduce emissions.
