How Nature Carves Massive Voids
If seawater seeps beneath a sturdy sandcastle on the beach, it looks solid on the outside, but it crumbles the moment you step on it. Natural sinkholes form through a very similar process.
They most commonly occur when limestone underground dissolves in water, carving out massive subterranean spaces. As rainwater falls through the atmosphere, it absorbs carbon dioxide and turns slightly acidic. When this acidic water filters into the ground, it gradually dissolves the calcium carbonate in limestone over tens of thousands of years.
Over time, underground caves of all sizes form beneath the surface. As these caves expand or the overlying soil and rock layer thins out, the cave ceiling can no longer support the weight of the land above, suddenly collapsing into a dramatic crater.
Why Asphalt Collapses in City Centers
Sinkholes frequently strike in the middle of concrete-covered cities far from natural limestone formations. These urban sinkholes are usually caused by underground construction and aging infrastructure rather than natural erosion.
When buried water or sewer pipes crack, escaping water washes away the surrounding soil bit by bit. As groundwater and soil wash away together, a massive void opens up directly underneath the asphalt. The street appears completely normal on top, but underneath, it is as hollow as an eggshell.
When heavy vehicles like trucks or buses drive across the weakened surface, the thin layer of pavement shatters, plunging vehicles and pavement into the hollow pit below. Excessive groundwater pumping during subway excavation or high-rise foundation work can also destabilize surrounding ground and trigger cave-ins.
The Hidden Physics Behind Ground Support
While a sinkhole appears in the blink of an eye, it is actually the final result of a long, slow process happening beneath our feet.
Under normal conditions, groundwater filling the spaces between soil particles acts like a supportive pillar by exerting pressure to hold up the ground aboveโa force known as pore water pressure. However, during severe droughts or when groundwater is aggressively pumped out, the supporting pressure of groundwater disappears. Without water holding the soil particles in place, the unsupported ground loses its strength and caves in.
Because of this, sinkholes are not completely unpredictable disasters. Before a collapse occurs, the ground often gives subtle warning signsโsuch as minor dips in the road, widening cracks in sidewalks, or fissures in building walls. Using advanced tools like Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), engineers can detect underground voids early and prevent catastrophic collapses.
