Definition A blue hole is a massive, vertical marine sinkhole formed when an ancient terrestrial limestone cave was flooded by rising sea levels after the Ice Age. Because it is drastically deeper than the surrounding shallows, it appears strikingly dark blue from above.
A Deep Blue Void in an Emerald Sea
Look down at shallow coral lagoons from the sky, and you will see glowing shades of emerald and turquoise. Yet right in the middle, you might spot a circular opening of deep, midnight blue looking back like a giant pupil. This is a blue hole.
Surrounding waters are often only a few meters deep; sunlight easily hits the white sandy bottom and bounces right back, creating brilliant turquoise tones. In contrast, the inside of a blue hole drops dozens or even hundreds of meters deep. As sunlight travels through the water, red wavelengths get absorbed near the surface, while only energetic, short-wavelength blue light penetrates deeply before reflecting back. This leaves the hole looking like a mysterious dark void.

Ice Age Caves Submerged by Rising Seas
Blue holes were not originally carved out by ocean currents underwater. Tens of thousands of years ago, during the last Ice Age, vast amounts of the Earth's water were locked up in glaciers. Global sea levels were over a hundred meters (hundreds of feet) lower than they are today.
Back then, these areas were not ocean floors at allโthey were dry limestone plains exposed to wind and rain. Rainwater absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and turns slightly acidic, slowly dissolving the calcium carbonate in the rock to carve out immense subterranean caverns. This geological process creates what is known as karst topography.
Over countless centuries, the ceilings of these caverns grew too heavy and collapsed, creating gaping vertical sinkholes on the surface. When the Ice Age ended and sea levels surged, ocean water rushed in and flooded the sinkholes completely, creating the awe-inspiring blue holes we see today.
Under the Surface: An Inhospitable Underwater Time Capsule
It is easy to picture a blue hole as just a giant, crystal-clear swimming pool, but diving deep reveals a harsh and bizarre environment. Because a blue hole is essentially a vertical shaft sealed on the sides and bottom, there is virtually no vertical water circulation or convection.
Descend past a certain sunlit depth, and oxygen vanishes entirely, creating an anoxic (oxygen-free) dead zone. Organic matter that sinks to the bottom decays, creating a murky, fog-like layer of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas that hovers like an underwater cloud. It looks just like an eerie lake trapped beneath the sea.
Without oxygen, everyday marine life like fish and corals cannot survive here. However, this total absence of oxygen and decomposing bacteria turns the deep blue hole into a natural time capsule, preserving the bones and plant fossils of Ice Age animals in pristine condition for thousands of years.
