Why Do Batteries Puff Up Like Balloons?

Most modern smart devices rely on lithium-ion batteries. Inside these batteries, positive and negative electrodes are tightly packed alongside a liquid electrolyte—which carries electrical charges—separated by a thin insulating layer.
However, as a battery ages or suffers physical stress, this electrolyte becomes chemically unstable. The liquid gradually decomposes into gases like carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and hydrocarbons. Trapped inside the sealed pouch with nowhere to go, the gas forces the casing outward, causing it to swell.

The biggest culprits behind battery swelling are excessive heat and poor charging habits. Playing demanding games while plugged in or leaving your device in a scorching car on a summer day causes internal temperatures to spike dramatically.
High heat accelerates oxidation reactions within the battery chemicals, churning out gas much faster. Keeping a device plugged in at 100% for prolonged periods or repeatedly draining it down to 0% also speeds up electrode degradation.
Most modern smartphones use pouch-style batteries encased in thin aluminum laminate rather than rigid metal cans to stay slim and light. Because they offer less resistance to internal pressure, they easily inflate like a balloon whenever gas builds up.
What Should You Do with a Swollen Battery?
If your battery has swollen, pressing down on it or attempting to poke it with a needle or knife to vent the gas is extremely dangerous. Even though it may look like an ordinary air cushion, it is packed with volatile chemicals and stored electrical energy.
Piercing a swollen battery allows oxygen to rush in, instantly triggering sparks. If the damaged internal separator allows the positive and negative electrodes to touch, it can trigger thermal runaway—a violent chain reaction that produces severe heat, fire, or explosions.
If you discover a bulging battery, unplug the charger immediately and power down the device. Store it safely in a cool, non-flammable area, and bring it to an authorized service center as soon as possible for a professional replacement.
