Living things work the exact same way. An individual animal or human is born, grows old, and eventually dies. Yet the DNA instructions inside them can live on indefinitely through their offspring. Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins described our bodies as elaborate survival machines built to protect and carry our genes.

Nature documentaries often show animals putting themselves in danger to help others. For instance, a ground squirrel will shout an alarm call when a hawk swoops down from above. The caller draws the predator's attention and risks its own life, but its family members hear the warning and dive into safety.
On the surface, this looks like pure self-sacrifice. But look at it through the eyes of a gene, and the math changes completely. Even if one squirrel dies, saving several siblings or offspring—who each share about half of its genes—means more copies of that gene survive in the end.
Even acts of sacrifice and cooperation in nature are strategies crafted by genes to protect their own copies. To spread more duplicates of themselves, genes hardwired the instincts for cooperation and altruism deep into our brains and bodies.
A Closer Look: Do Genes Have Minds?
The word 'selfish' often leads people to think genes have greedy thoughts or evil intentions. But genes have no brains, desires, or feelings. They are simply molecules of chemical code.
When a random mutation gives a gene a slight edge in copying itself, that gene spreads, while less effective variants fade away. Natural selection acts like a giant sieve, and the end result only makes it look as if genes were acting with selfish motives.
Does this mean humans are helpless robots destined to obey genetic commands? Not at all. Thanks to our intelligence and culture, we can make choices that go directly against our reproductive programming—like using birth control or donating blood to strangers. We are the only creatures capable of defying the tyranny of our genes.
