Definition A total lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up in a perfect straight line in space. As the Moon passes entirely into Earth's darkest shadow, it transforms from its usual silvery white into an eerie, glowing red.
When the Moon Hides in Earth's Shadow
Stand in front of a flashlight, and you cast a dark shadow on the wall.
The exact same thing happens in outer space. The massive Sun shines like a bright flashlight, and when Earth stands in front of it, a long, dark umbra (Earth's full shadow) forms behind our planet. Most of the time, the Moon orbits Earth at a slight tilt, dodging this shadow.
Every once in a while, the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up in a straight line. When that happens, the Moon slowly glides into the dark shadow behind Earth. If only part of the Moon dips in, we get a partial lunar eclipse. When the entire Moon sinks completely into the shadow, we call it a total lunar eclipse.
You can watch a total lunar eclipse with your naked eyes from anywhere on the night side of Earth. Unlike solar eclipses, which require special protective glasses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to view with just your eyes or a pair of binoculars.
Why Does It Turn Red Instead of Vanishing?
If the Moon is totally immersed in Earth's shadow, shouldn't it go pitch-black and disappear? In reality, it stays visible, glowing in an eerie copper-red hue. That is why it is often called a 'Blood Moon.'
The secret behind this red glow lies in Earth's atmosphere. Sunlight is a mixture of all rainbow colors, from red to violet. When sunlight skims through Earth's atmosphere, shorter wavelengths like blue light scatter in all directions.
Red light, which has longer wavelengths, passes through the atmosphere and bends slightly inward. This bent red light reaches deep into Earth's shadow and bathes the lunar surface. In short, the red moonlight you see during a total lunar eclipse is the combined glow of every sunrise and sunset on Earth, projected onto the Moon and bouncing back to our eyes.
A Closer Look: Why Not Every Full Moon?
A full moon rises every month, so why don't we get a total lunar eclipse every month? The reason is that Earth's orbit and the Moon's orbit do not sit on the exact same plane.
The Moon's orbital path is tilted by about 5 degrees relative to Earth's orbit around the Sun. While 5 degrees seems tiny, across vast cosmic distances it is wide enough for the Moon to pass above or below Earth's shadow.
An eclipse can only happen when the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up perfectly at specific intersection points called nodes. Furthermore, Earth's shadow splits into a lighter outer ring (penumbra) and a dark inner core (umbra). Only when the Moon plunges entirely into the dark umbra do we witness a total lunar eclipse.
