Definition A total solar eclipse is an astronomical event where the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth, completely covering the face of the Sun. As sunlight is entirely blocked, the sky turns as dark as night in the middle of the day, revealing stars and planets.
How can two objects so different in size fit so perfectly?
Hold your thumb close to your eyes, and you can easily block out a giant mountain in the distance. Regardless of an object's actual physical size, its perceived size depends entirely on how far away it is from your eyes.
In reality, the Sun's diameter is about 400 times larger than the Moon's. But in an incredible cosmic coincidence, the Sun is also about 400 times farther away from Earth than the Moon is.

A closer look at why it is so rare
The Moon orbits Earth roughly once a month, passing between Earth and the Sun during every new moon. You might wonder why we do not get a total solar eclipse every single month.
That is because the Moon's orbit around Earth is tilted by about 5 degrees relative to Earth's orbit around the Sun.
Most months, the Moon's shadow misses Earth entirely, passing above or below our planet. An eclipse can only happen when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align in a straight line at the exact intersection of these two orbital planes.
On top of that, the Moon's dark inner shadow (the umbra) sweeps across Earth in a very narrow path—usually only 60 to 120 miles (100 to 200 km) wide. While a total solar eclipse happens somewhere on Earth every 1 to 2 years, seeing one from your own hometown happens only once every 375 years on average.
