Eventually, when Earth sits between the Sun and Moon, we see the entire illuminated side as a radiant full moon. Afterward, the visible light wanes through the third quarter and a waning crescent before returning to a New Moon, completing a cycle of about 29.5 days.

Setting the Record Straight: Itโ€™s Not Earth's Shadow

A common misconception is that moon phases happen because Earth casts a shadow on the Moon. In reality, Earth's shadow blocks the Moon only during a lunar eclipseโ€”a rare event that happens just a couple of times a year when the Moon passes directly through Earth's shadow.

Everyday moon phases have nothing to do with shadows cast by Earth; they simply occur because our viewing angle of the sunlit side changes. It is just like holding an apple by a sunny window and slowly turning it in your handโ€”the illuminated curve appears to shift from your perspective.
