Lenticular Cloud
It is like a flying saucer hat hovering motionless over a windy mountain peak as if the sky were paused on a freeze-frame.
Definition A lenticular cloud is a smooth, lens- or saucer-shaped cloud that forms when strong winds blow over high mountain ridges. Even in howling winds, it appears to hover perfectly stationary in a single spot in the sky.
Why Are They Shaped Like Flying Saucers?
When water rushes down a river past a large boulder, it creates a series of ripples and standing waves downstream. Air moving across the sky behaves the exact same way. When strong winds slam into a massive mountain range, the air is forced upward over the peaks, creating oscillating atmospheric wavesโknown as mountain waves (or lee waves)โon the other side.
As moist air rides up to the crest of these giant air waves, it expands and cools due to lower pressure. Once it cools to its dew point, water vapor condenses into visible water droplets, forming a smooth, rounded cloud.
As the air descends down the trough of the wave, it warms back up, causing the droplets to evaporate back into invisible vapor. Because the cloud only exists at the upward crest of the wave, it takes on its signature smooth, lens- or saucer-like shape.
Why Doesn't It Move Even in Strong Winds?
Most clouds drift across the sky with the wind. Lenticular clouds, however, stay stubbornly in one spot even in gale-force winds exceeding 60 miles per hour (100 km/h). This eerie stillness led many people in the past to mistake them for hovering alien UFOs.
Yet, the air within the cloud is far from still. Think of a water fountain: the arch of the water jet looks stationary, but water molecules are continuously shooting up and falling down at high speed.
A lenticular cloud works the same way. Fierce winds are constantly racing through it. New cloud droplets form continuously on the upwind side, while existing droplets evaporate instantly on the downwind side. Because this cycle of formation and evaporation happens continuously in the exact same spot, the cloud appears frozen in place to our eyes.
A Closer Look at the Science
To be more precise, lenticular clouds are the visible manifestation of atmospheric standing waves. When air layers are stable and moisture levels are just right, several waves can ripple downstream from the mountain, stacking lenticular clouds on top of each other like a towering pile of giant pancakes.
Seeing a lenticular cloud in the sky is unmistakable proof that violent turbulence and swirling rotor winds are churning nearby. While the cloud looks serene and smooth as glass from the ground, dangerous downdrafts and severe turbulence lurk inside and beneath it.
For this reason, airplane pilots treat lenticular clouds as major hazard zones and steer well clear of them. They are essentially nature's most beautiful warning beacons in the sky.
